Library Databases

The Pend Oreille County Library District subscribes to several databases for your research needs. They are listed alphabetically by subject, and you will need your library card to access these databases.

Animals

EBSCO Animals - Provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. The information is available in both short and long formats and describes the nature and habitat of familiar animals.

Automotive

Chilton's Auto Repair Reference Center - Manuals for repair procedures, service bulletins & recalls, wiring diagrams, and labor. Not all years, makes and models listed. (PLEASE NOTE: If you get a “Page Not Found” or “Choose Another Vehicle” message, the database does not yet contain information on the particular vehicle you requested.)

Business

Business Source Elite - As the world’s largest full text business database, Business Source Premier provides full text for nearly 3,300 scholarly business journals, including full text for more than 1000 peer-reviewed business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text articles (in PDF format) for more than 300 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922.

Regional Business News - Provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the US. Updated on a daily basis. For Reuters On-Line News Service (last two weeks), headline stories are updated every hour.

Education & Academic

Academic Search Elite - Provides full text for nearly 3,500 scholarly publications in all major areas of research, including full text for nearly 2,600 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage offers information dating back to 1975.

ERIC - The Educational Resource Information Center (ERIC), a U.S. Government clearinghouse for information on education, contains more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 980 educational and education-related journals.

Professional Development Collection - Designed for professional educators. Provides a highly specialized collection of over 515 full text journals, including nearly 350 peer-reviewed titles. Most comprehensive collection of full text education journals in the world.

Encyclopedia

Encyclopaedia Britannica - An online version of the encyclopedia known to many users in its print format.

Funk & Wagnall’s New Encyclopedia - This database provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.

For Kids & Students

Kids Search - Kids Search makes it easy for students to search by keyword or by topic to find the most useful search results. The resources available via the database include a dictionary, an encyclopedia, downloadable images, and teacher resources.

Middle Search Plus - Provides full text for nearly 150 popular magazines for middle and jr. high school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text information dates as far back as 1990.

Searchasaurus - Searchasaurus was created as a kid-friendly search interface to two databases -- Middle Search and Primary Search. Middle Search is a resource for the Middle School student and Primary Search is targeted for students in the primary grades. Together they provide information from 186 journals. with full text coverage for 155 titles. The database also contains some pamphlet material, 76,000 primary source documents, a general encyclopedia, an encyclopedia of animals, and a large image collection. Coverage for some resources goes back to 1984; coverage for full-text entries goes back to 1989.

Student Research Center - EBSCO's Student Research Center makes it easy for students to search by keyword or by topic to find information on a wide range of subjects. Information is drawn from a wide variety of sources: magazines, books, newspapers, photos, maps, and more. The database also includes an online dictionary and teacher resources.

Primary Search - Provides full text for more than 50 popular magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates back to 1990. Updated daily.

Genealogy

Heritage Quest - This collection assembles genealogies, local histories, primary source materials, and genealogical and local history serials. An ongoing project, Heritage Quest will grow to encompass materials from all 50 states including over 7 million pages. Through this site you can: search the bibliographic citations and full text of all monographs and serials; browse online the digital image of every page; jump directly to your keyword hit in a book or article; download the images in PDF format for more extensive viewing; take notes and save them in a notebook, from which you can email, print, or download citations and notes at the end of your session.

General Reference

FirstSearch - FirstSearch offers a variety of databases including a collection of scholarly journals, articles and reports in education, U.S. government publications, areas of medicine, an index of worldwide conference proceedings, Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia and four almanacs, and the WorldCat catalog of books and other materials in libraries worldwide.

MAS Ultra: Public Library Edition - This database provides full text from nearly 350 periodicals covering general reference topics, including health, science, and other areas. In addition, MAS Ultra - Public Library Edition offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 500 periodicals and full text for hundreds of important pamphlets.

MasterFILE Premier - Designed specifically for public libraries, this database provides full text for nearly 1,950 general reference publications with full text information dating back to 1975. Covers virtually every subject area of general interest. Includes 164 full text reference books, nearly 100,000 biographies, 76,000 primary source documents, and an image collection of 116,000 photos, maps and flags.

ProQuest - Search the full collection of journals, magazines and newspapers for information on a broad range of general reference subjects. Sources include both newspapers and magazines.

Health

Health Source, Consumer Edition - Search for information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine, and general health. Features searchable full text for over 190 journals including Consumer Reports on Health and Men’s Health, as well as abstracts and indexing for over 205 general health, nutrition and professional health care publications.

Health Source, Nursing/Academic Editon - Provides nearly 600 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. The database also features abstracts for over 615 additional journals in the health sciences.

History

American Indian History & Culture - Provides more than 1,770 entries describing the lives of significant American Indians and non-Indians who interacted with them, covering figures from prehistory through the 21st century. (Flash Tutorial)

Literature

NoveList - Your guide to fiction. Contains materials for all ages including picture books, children’s chapter books, young adult titles and books for adult readers. Locate other authors and titles of interest. Look for books by entering descriptive terms. Browse theme-oriented book lists at every reading level through Explore Fiction. Look for outstanding titles in Best Fiction. Learn more about books and authors through Feature Articles, Book Discussion Guides, and BookTalks.

Newspapers

Newspaper Source - Provides selected full text for over 200 regional U.S. newspapers, international newspapers, newswires, newspaper columns and other sources as well as indexing and abstracts for national newspapers. Updated daily.
