Event Details
On October 14, 2023, the moon will pass between Earth and the sun, creating a ring of fire as the sun’s outer edges remain visible around the dark moon.
Here in Pend Oreille County, we will be able to see about 70 percent of the eclipse. Which means it will NEVER be safe to look at it without protection. It will begin around 8:09 and end about 10:44 with the max at 9:23 .To find out where and when to get the best view, you can visit the NASA web page about the 2023 Annular Eclipse or https://eclipse2024.org/2023eclipse/eclipse-cities/city/43277.html
It is essential to protect your eyes. Never look directly at the sun with the naked eye because this can cause serious eye damage. It is also important to avoid using regular sunglasses, telescopes, or binoculars to observe the eclipse because they won’t provide adequate protection.
To safely watch the annular eclipse, use solar viewing glasses or handheld solar viewers specifically designed for eclipse watching. You can also make a pinhole projector to view the eclipse indirectly. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory provides instructions to create a pinhole camera.
All four Pend Oreille Libraries have solar viewing glasses available on a first come first serve basis. Children must always view under adult supervision.
