Friends of the Library

What are the Friends of the Library?

The Friends of Pend Oreille County Library District is a not-for-profit 501(C)(3) all-volunteer group established in 1976. It provides funding for programs, events, technology and experiences in support of the Pend Oreille County Library District’s Mission to “connect our communities with opportunities to enrich lives through empowerment, lifelong learning, and recreation.” Funding items and experiences that fall outside the established District budget.

Library Friends groups around the world have traditionally raised money by holding book sales. While that is still a mainstay, our Friends are going outside the “covers” to raise library awareness as well as funds. After Hours Socials, a Collaborative Quilt Project (followed by a raffle), refurbished computers, and a possible “garage sale” are among the past and planned fundraising initiatives.

Currently, the Friends are supporting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for children aged birth to 5 living in Pend Oreille County.  Interested families can register online or in person at any library.  Each eligible registered child will receive an age-appropriate book each month through the mail at no cost to the parent.

The Friends are also raising funds to support the Newport Library Community Garden Project.  Crushed and bagged aluminum cans can be dropped at the recycle bin at the Newport Library’s back door to help fund this project. Additional funding comes from the sale of large, sturdy, reusable tote bags; they are offered for $4 at the library.  All profits will go to the garden project.

Each branch has an active and vibrant Friends group that works for their community.
